Akromion Special Hospital for Orthopaedics and Traumatology is Croatia's largest private hospital and the first hospital south of the Sava River in Novi Zagreb's Dugave district. The project represents an investment of €27 million.
The hospital was founded in 2008 and initially operated in Krapinske Toplice, where it eventually outgrew its premises. Its new Zagreb location is more accessible to patients from across Croatia and abroad. The institution specialises in treating injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, offering a wide range of procedures from arthroscopy and joint replacement to reconstruction, as well as conducting research and professional education.
Tering prepared the mechanical design documentation for the HVAC plants and installations, including natural gas, medical gas and laboratory gas systems, and provided professional supervision of the mechanical works. Kamgrad d.o.o. of Zagreb was the main contractor, and the hospital opened on 14 September 2023.
The HVAC installations include:
- a heat-pump plant using groundwater as the heat source;
- a modular outdoor hot-water boiler plant serving solely as backup to the primary system;
- base heating and cooling through terminal units selected to suit the function and HVAC requirements of each zone, including radiators, fan-coil units, indoor units of reversible heat-recovery heat pumps and split systems, as appropriate;
- air-handling systems for low-pressure ventilation, heating, cooling and humidification of individual zones. The air-handling units are designed and configured for the specific HVAC requirements of operating theatres, hospital areas, laboratories, kitchen and restaurant, with clinical spaces designed to applicable standards;
- extract ventilation for spaces that require it, including garages;
- internal unmetered and metered gas installations serving the boiler plant and kitchen;
- a medical-gas supply station, compressor and vacuum station, with distribution to all points of use throughout the building, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, helium, argon, compressed air, nitrogen and nitrous oxide;
- automatic controls.
